Suspension of Work by Electric Furnace workers in Sadullapur crematorium
MALDA, 28 JULY: The cremation work remained suspended for nearly 24 hours at the electric furnace at Sadullapur crematorium. The staff who are responsible for managing the electric furnace ceased working as they were reportedly assaulted by a group of people from Khasimari who brought a dead body for cremation. As the electric furnace was out of order for the time being, they got infuriated and started assaulting the concerned staff. They were allegedly intoxicated. They even assaulted Mr. Shrikanta Chatterjee who looks after the technical side of the furnace. Seeing Mr. Chatterjee being assaulted roughly, his colleagues intervened and the fiasco commenced. The staff stopped the electric furnace in demand of their security and demanded the presence of the Sabhadhipatim Malda Zilla Parishad as the furnace is managed by MZP. This morning police personnel from Englishbazar Police Station arrived the spot to look into the matter. They spoke to the staff of the furnace and assured them of their security. A sub-Inspector of Englishbazar Police Station told The Statesman that the normalcy has been restored after the police took the complaint of the crematorium staff into consideration. The Sabhadhipati was not available for comment as she told that she was busy in a meeting while contacted by The Statesman.
