MALDA, 25 AUG: The indefinite strike coupled with demonstration convened by CITU backed EBRM workers’ union and other workers’ unions at English Bazaar Regulated Market (EBRM) was called off from last evening after the district magistrate, Malda Mr Pramal Kumar Samanta intervened into the matter. The district magistrate convened a meeting with all affiliated union leaders along with the secretary of EBRMS Mr Debjyoti Sarkar on 23 August. CITU and TUCC backed union leaders remained rigid on their demand that no flood light can be installed spending about 1 crore rupees. They drew the attention of the district magistrate to the point that if flood lights are installed, EBRMS will would have to bear an additional electric bill of about Rs 1 lakh 50 thousand per month which would be an unnecessary expense for EBRMS.
The secretary of CITU backed EBRM Karmachari Samity Mr Bharat Chandra Sarkar said that the decision of installing flood lights was cancelled in the meeting. He said that the staff of their union had joined regular service from yester evening. “If the authority adopts any such decision anew, they have to take the unions into confidence to discuss all related aspects”, said Mr Sarkar.
The district magistrate Mr P K Samanta said that the problem regarding the installation of flood light had been resolved. “The staff of EBRM promised to join work and restore normalcy”, added Mr Samanta.
