MALDA 22 AUG: Ms Sabitri Mitra, who joined Trinamul Congress right a month back, was declared as the district Trinamul Congress president instead of Mr Goutam Chakrabarty who was chosen as the vice president of state Trinamul Congress. Central deputy minister for shipping and port and general secretary of AITMC Mr Mukul Roy declared the organisational change yesterday in a public meeting organised by Malda district Trinamul Congress. Mr Roy said that Ms Mitra has a praiseworthy contribution in organising movements against CPI (M) and hence she is the right person to lead Trinamul in Malda. Ms Mitra was expressively jubilant with her new responsibility and said she wants to work taking counsel from all Trinamul leaders and supporters.
Mr Roy said that Mr Goutam Chakrabarty has performed excellently in organising Trinamul in the district and hence his wide experience as a leader will be utilised in the state level. Mr Chakrabarty said that he would accept his new responsibility and start functioning soon under the guidance of Ms Mamata Banerjee. However, some Trinamul leaders who were reluctant to express their names commented that such a abrupt change in the district leadership of the party might not be accepted by the grass root workers of the party.
This may be recalled that Ms Sabitri Mitra had once served as district Congress president also. Sources said that after the demise of Ghani Khan Choudhury she was fast losing her hold in Congress and had to digest the authority of present district Congress president Mr A H Khan Choudhury, Congress MP Ms Mousam Noor and other Ghani Khan relatives who emerged into Congress long after her. Moreover, her winning seat Araidanga has been extinct after ‘delimitation’ was introduced.
Congress sources said that Ms Mitra wanted to ensure another safe assembly seat to fight election as a Congress candidate which could not be guaranteed and so she joined Trinamul to ensure a safe assembly seat.
Mr Mohan Tudu, sahakari sabhadhipati of Malda Zilla Parishad and a veteran BJP leader joined Trinamul in the meeting along with about 200 supporters from CPI (M) and Congress.
