MALDA, 3 SEPT: The Public Health Engineering (PHE) department is to initiate a campaign shortly against renting of pipes of arsenic free drinking water at different places of all blocks of Kaliachak. It has been learnt that a number of farmers of Kaliachak-III block are cracking the pipes of arsenic free water for irrigating into the jute field. Recently PHE department lodged a complaint in this regard with Baishnabnagar police station. About 40 complaints against illegal cracking of water pipes were recorded in past two years but the problem continues. A senior PHE official (arsenic area) said that measures would be adopted soon to generate consciousness among people against such practices.
It has been learnt that a section of inhabitants of Jainpur area under Kaliachak-III recently cracked the arsenic free water pipe to get abundant pure water for the cultivation of jute and ‘aman’ paddy. The PHE engineers, who went to mend the pipe, were prevented from mending the pipe by the local dwellers. The engineers were compelled to return without repairing the pipe which resulted in the interruption of water supply to the block. The incident was reported to Baishnabnagar police station. Eventually, the pipe was mended by the interference of police and water supply got regularised.
The cracking the arsenic free water pipes has been a longstanding problem in the district particularly in Kaliachak- I, II and III blocks which are severely arsenic prone. The drinking water is often misused in brick factories, mango orchards, pisciculture and for other purposes. This often hinders the smooth supply of arsenic free drinking water.
The PHE officials are concerned over the issue and finally resolved to resort to a vigorous campaign against this random illegal practice. They believe that the problem cannot be solved without having assistance from the common villagers.
