Stir in Malda District Hospital over Changing a New Born Baby

MALDA, 29 AUG: After yesterday’s incident of infusing expired saline into a patient, there was another tremendous stir in Malda district hospital today over the allegation of changing a new born baby. It was learnt that Mrs Ruksena Bibi, a pregnant woman from Ranagaipur village of Harischandrapur was admitted to Malda district hospital yesterday. Her husband and other family members claimed that she had delivered a male baby and the new born baby was shown to them. But her relations alleged that today they were informed by nurses that the baby was a female and it was dead. At this, the enraged relatives started protesting aloud and tension gripped at the hospital premises.

Police from the district hospital outpost and then from English Bazaar police station rushed to the spot and held a discussion with the agitated relations of Mrs Ruksena Bibi. The relations refused to accept that Mrs Bibi gave birth to a dead female baby.

Finally, the superintendent of Malda district hospital Dr Himadri Anri intervened into the matter. He said: “On receipt of a written complaint from the patient, I have enquired a probe into the matter. Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Health (DCMOH) - I will be the chairman of the enquiry committee and the committee will submit its report within a week.” He added that there might be a DNA test also to ascertain the identity of the dead female child, if necessary.

Regarding yesterday’s incident of using a bottle of expired saline for a retired health staff, Dr Anri said that a separate enquiry is being conducted under DCMOH-I to find the persons involved in the negligence which could have killed the patient.
