Children’s Death Rally Continues in Malda Dist Hospital
MALDA, 14 NOV: Children’s Day could have been no worse in Malda as at least nine babies died in Malda District Hospital in last 24 hours. Among them 6 babies died since this morning alone. It may be recalled that since 8 November the hospital has been witnessing series of baby deaths. With a respite for two days in between it has resumed today again. In one week the toll has reached to 22. Playing the same old record Hospital authority claimed that they had nothing to do in any of the cases as the condition of the babies were ‘critical’ and there was infrastructural lapses in the hospital.
Those who had died since last night were mostly new born. Around 8am today one year old Bapan Mandal of village Sripur Colony under Kaliachak police station was admitted to hospital with cold and cough. Within one hour he succumbed to his ailment. His parents Mr Prakash Mandal and Mrs Mangali Mandal alleged that the baby had little disease but after he was given an injection the baby died.
Mr Asraful Haque of Kaliachak took his pregnant wife Mrs Jahanara Bibi to the hospital last night. This morning, she delivered twin babies---one son and one daughter. But one died at 6.58 am and the other two minutes later. Mrs Ajinur Bibi, wife of daily labourer Rintu Mia of village Kamath under Baishnabnagar police station had delivered a girl child at 11.20 pm last night. But this morning she too died. It is alleged that no pediatrician took the pain of examining the baby since its birth.
Mrs Anjira Biwi and Mrs Nabiran Biwi included themselves in the unfortunate list as both their new born babies died this morning. Mrs Lalman Biwi of village Bangitola had lost her new born girl child at 12 noon today.
One Reshma Biwi of village Jadupur was admitted to the hospital with labour pain yesterday morning. But her new born baby died at 10.35 pm last night.
Besides, Mrs Latika Ghosh of Habibpur was admitted with her 5 day old daughter for last three days. But the baby died in last morning. Yesterday afternoon Mrs Unjari Biwi of village Amrititola saw her new born girl child died in the hospital.
The chief medical officer of health (CMOH) of Malda Dr Swapan Jhariyat, however, found no fault with the hospital authority for these deaths. “Most of the babies were new born and critically underweight. Despite our best effort to attend them, we could not save the babies”, he said. He argued that district health department has already taken up measures like employing more pediatricians or opening a special care unit for the babies.
Dr S P Basak, director of health services, conceded the series of death in Malda and said, “We have already taken emergency measures in Malda cancelling the leaves of the health workers. We’re informed that the babies were underweight and critical in condition.”
