Standing Committee on Minority Affairs Visit Malda

MALDA, 15 NOV: The standing committee on minority affairs today expressed dissatisfaction over the utilization of minority development fund in the district. The standing committee members held a seminar this afternoon to listen to the problems of the minority communities.

The standing committee under the chairmanship of Mr Nasiruddin Ahmed reached Malda this morning. The committee members including MLAs like Mr Rahim Baxi, Mr Abdul Rezzaq, Mr Manirul Islam, Mr Rafiqul Rahaman and Mr Sheikh Sahabaz today held a meeting with the district administrations regarding different development schemes for the minorities.

The standing committee members also visited a few hostels for minority students and cemetery also as learnt from sources. Later, Mr Ahmed said: “The fund for the multi dimensional development for the minorities could not be completely utilized in 2009-10 financial year. Out of Rs 58 crore sanctioned for the purpose only 40% has been utilized so far.” Blaming the former LF government Mr Ahmed said: “The new state government would ensure all round development of minorities. The lack of education and employment among minorities is resulting in the increase of miscreants more from the minority communities.” He said that education and employment must be ensured for minorities so that they can also be in the main stream of development.

It has been learnt from district administrative sources that scarcity of land, lack of social awareness and reluctance of a section of officers are responsible for the non-utilization of the fund. “Fund has also been allotted for blocks like Habibpur, Bamangola and Gazole where the minority population is almost negligible,” said a senior administrative officer.

The ADM (general) Mr Tarun Singha Roy said: “We discussed about various schemes for minority development with the standing committee members.” However, Mr Singha Roy refused to concede that the standing committee was dissatisfied with the utilization of fund.
