BJP, RSP Criticize Imam Allowance Distribution in Malda
Malda, 30 May: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demonstrated in front of the district administrative headquarter today ceremoniously distributed allowance among the imams today. Interestingly, though the district administrations have received allowance for 2005 imama in the district, only 1057 imams have so far applied for the allowance.
Around 1.30 pm today BJP supporters gathered in front of the district collectorate building and raised slogans against distribution of imam-allwance while the district administrations were handing over the cheques in presence of the minister and people’s representatives. District BJP president Shyamchand Ghosh, who led today’s demonstrations, said, “Such a measure would adversely affect the communal harmony that has been prevailing in the state for long.” “The matter is still sub judice and the state government should have waited till the verdict comes. Their hurry shows that they are more interested in exploiting minorities for election purpose than to ensure their comprehensive development,” Ghosh said threatening that they would continue organizing movements against the ‘state government’s vote-bank politics.’
RSP MLA Rahim Boxi, who was present in today’s programme, also criticized the state government. “The programme instead of organizing so hurriedly could have made after consulting with all the MLAs. We think that the process of preparing the list was faulty and there are doubts whether all eligible imams are getting the allowance,” Boxi said. He too anticipated in his speech that such a hurried decision might lead to a ‘social anarchy.’
Meanwhile, the district administrations started distributing cheques of Rs 2500 to the imams from today. 24 imams mainly from English Bazaar block were handed over the cheques today in presence of the minister of state AN Khan Choudhury and some MLAs.
It has been learnt that the district administrations have received Rs 78.53 lakh for paying off allowance to 2005 imams in Malda. But only 1057 imams have applied for the allowance so far. Additional district magistrate (general) Nurul Islam said, “We’re yet to get list of eligible imams from seven out of 15 blocks. Once we receive the list, there would be no delay in disbursing the allowance.”
