Controversies Loom Large between DM and ADMs
MALDA, 16 MAY: A number of subordinate officers including additional district magistrates (ADM) today were directly at war with district magistrate (DM) following an ‘untrue claim’ of DM Dr Archana that the ban on the scribes to enter the collectorate building was made by the ADM-G Nurul Islam. The officers are even contemplating of appraising their state leadership. Mr Islam, ADM-G said, “We are constantly feeling humiliated; it is difficult to perform wholeheartedly in this situation.” He had informed the divisional commissioner about his grievances. Apart from Mr Islam number of officers also expressed their wish to be transferred, sources informed.
This may be mentioned that DM Archana, was allegedly avoiding the media persons since 9th of this month when an allegation was raised against her regarding assault of an NVF worker. The NVF alleged that she was locked up in a bathroom for hours failing to serve DM’s personal order. On the basis of the complaint that published in media a probe was ordered into the matter by the chief secretary.
Today when media persons went to enter the DM’s office (Malda Collectorate) to attend a press meet convened by the DM herself, security personnel stopped them. It was said, that there was official order to bar the scribes from entering collectorate. Humiliated media persons went on to meet DM to express their grievances against such restriction. DM passed the buck to ADM-G saying “I’ve not given such orders.” She even asked the concerned security to prove that the order was made by Mr Islam.
This made the ADM-G to outburst. Taking another ADM Nilkamal Biswas by his side, Mr Islam reacted sharply, “I’ve not grown horns on my head to give such order without DM’s approval. It was the DM who had asked me to give such orders and I was also told that otherwise action would be taken.” He also said that it was the DM’s verbal instruction following which they had abstained from entertaining media in their offices. ADM-D Mr Biswas also stood by Mr Islam. Visibly shocked Mr Islam also talked to the divisional commissioner on this issue over telephone.

Administrative sources said that at least five senior officers of district including two block development officers (BDOs) had already sought transfer. Though they were tightlipped, it was learnt that they were reluctant to work under the present DM.
The WBCS Association is also strongly discontented with the DM. It is learnt that on being urged by the members of the association district secretary Sudip Mukherjee would write a letter to the state leadership appraising the ongoing ‘humiliations.’ However, political leaders reacted sharply against DM’s such stricture against media.
Dr Archana, however, said that she had no information regarding the grudge of the officers. “I think the matter was wrong. I had a cordial meeting with the officers today and none told me anything about such issues,” she said.
It may be noted during her stint as DM in Purba Medinipur, WBCS officers also wrote to chief secretary against her.
