MALDA, 25 MAY: Mr Pranab Mukherjee does not need support of the Trinamul Congress to become President of the country, claimed Malda MP Abu Hasem Khan Choudhury (Dalu).
Batting for the Union finance minister, Mr Khan Choudhury, said: “To have a Bengali President we six MPs for Bengal will meet UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi on 29 May. We want to nominate Pranab babu as our Presidential candidate.” Mr Khan Choudhury said: “Some may demand an apolitical intellectual for the post. However, considering all the duties a President has to perform, Mr Mukherjee has no alternative. Some might argue for his need in active politics, but it is the time the person is given the chair he deserves.”
Regarding Trinamul supremo Mamata Banerjee’s reservations about Mr Mukherjee and her preference for some other candidate, Mr Khan Choudhury said: “If Pranab babu fights for the post of President, we don’t need the support of the Trinamul. In fact, the Congress itself has more than the 54 per cent of the votes required. Besides, some more political parties are willing to support Mr Mukherjee as President. This may include even the BJP and the Samajwadi Party.” sns
