Enquiry Commission Starts Probing into UGB Letter Tampering Case

Malda, 28 May: A two member enquiry commission today reached Malda to probe into the tampering allegations of the interview letter for inspector of colleges (IC) post lodged by the University of Gour Banga (UGB) authorities. The commission would speak to concerned officials including the IC Dr Apurba Chakraborty and Dr Anita Chakraborty, who was a contender for the said post, as learnt from UGB sources.

This may be mentioned that in very first meeting of new university council (UC) of UGB on 25 March allegation was raised against the appointment of Dr Apurba Chakraborty as IC. A letter was produced by one of the members of the UC which was in fact an interview letter issued to Dr Anita Chakraborty, teacher of Chanchal College for the post of IC. The letter signed by the finance officer Zahir Hossain claimed that the scheduled interview date of 22 February, 2011 was cancelled and it would be held on 23 February, 2011. Interestingly the letter was issued on 11 Februray. Again the content of the letter stated that it was issued on 22 February.

Anita Chakraborty finally did not appear in the interview. Allegation was raised that there was gross misappropriation in the interest of extending undue advantage to Apurba Chakraborty and to deprive Anita Chakraborty, now an active member of Trinamul Congress influenced Gour Banga Adhyapak Mancha (GBAM).

The letter no wonder, rocked the meeting and might have strengthened the allegation of nepotism against the university authority. However, this led VC Prof Gopa Dutta to search for files and the original interview letter and receipt of the letter by Anita Chakraborty were found. Prof Dutta claimed that the letter which was produced in the meeting was a forged one which at once got the support of other members.

It was then resolved by the UC then that the matter would be seriously looked into. Accordingly, the then officiating registrar Dr SS Bairagya lodged an FIR at English Bazaar police station in this regard. UC also constituted a two member fact finding committee to probe into the matter.

Eventually, the enquiry commission reached the varsity. Officiating registrar Dr Madhab Adhikary said, “Member secretary of state council of higher education Subrata Ghosh and retired IPS Tapan Chattopadhyay have come to the campus to investigate the interview letter tampering allegations. They would speak to the teachers, non teaching employees and other officials whom they would deem fit to speak to.” Dr Adhikary also informed that both Apurba Chakraborty and Anita Chakraborty were summoned to face the commission. Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Achintya Biswas would also meet the commission members tomorrow.

Both Apurba Chakraborty and Anita Chakraborty could not be reached despite several attempts.

Meanwhile, fresh controversy has cropped up regarding the confirmation of Apurba Chakraborty as the IC. It has been learnt from sources that VC Prof Biswas in a letter dated 22 May, 2012 informed Dr Chakraborty that his probation period has been extended for another six months with effect from 25 February this year.

Though Dr Chakraborty was tightlipped in this regard, varsity sources revealed that he in a counter letter demanded that the VC should allow him all post confirmation benefits since his service as the IC has already been confirmed on 24 February this year as per UGB Act, 2007.
