Groom Beaten after Third Marriage Attempt
MALDA, 3 MAY: Groom was caught in a bid to marry for the third time and was severely roughed up by the villagers. Later he was handed over to police by the angry villagers. His mother too was detained by police. The incident took place last night at Amajamtola at the outskirt of Malda town.
Susanta Talukdar, a private security agent of Banshbari, English Bazaar was to marry Rakhi the daughter of Bharat Mandal of Amajamtola. Poor Bharat had to sell his only mango orchard to meet the demand of Susanta. Apart from Rs 20000, Mr Mandal had to give gold ornaments and furniture as dowry for the marriage. Accordingly, yesterday Susanta along with few of his associates came to marry Rakhi in the evening.
It was scheduled that marriage registrar would register their marriage before the religious rituals and party thereafter. The registrar arrived in time but Susanta refused to fill the form. Instead he insisted that the rituals be performed first and he would register three months later. This raised suspicion among the bride’s family members. At this time the marriage registrar identified Susanta.
He claimed that he himself was present in one of his earlier marriages at Old Malda. The neighbours and relatives of Mr Mandal mounted on pressure on Susanta and on the face of interrogation Susanta disclosed that a case of divorce was running on in Malda court with his first marriage. This infuriated the villagers and Susanta was roughed up for hiding his past. Finally he conceded that he had married twice earlier and this was his third venture. Even in the attire of the groom, Susanta was taken out of the house and was being roughed up. Nayan Mandal, nephew of Mr Bharat Mandal said, “At least Rs 3 lakh was spent for all this arrangement. We wanted the money back from the cheat. God knows what will happen to my sister.”
Later police from English Bazaar Police station reached the spot to rescue Susanta and arrested him. His mother Sita Talukdar was also held for interrogation.
