Kaliachak III BDO Prevents Child Marriage

Malda, 23 May, 2012: Another child marriage could be successfully prevented in the district, thanks to timely intervention of the block administrations of Kaliachak III. The guardian of the bride, after persuasion by the block development officer (BDO) and other officials, agreed to cancel the marriage.

It has been learnt that Rabiul Sheikh of Ketabtola village at Chakseherdi area under Baishnabnagar police station arranged the marriage of his underage daughter Sonia Khatun (12), a student of class IV of a local primary school with one Shaharukh Sheikh (17) of Banbigha village at Alipur area under Kaliachak police station. The marriage was to be solemnized today.

But soon after receiving the information that a child marriage was on the verge of being conducted, the BDO of Kaliachak III Suman Biswas contacted the social welfare department and himself rushed to the house of Rabiul. Mr Biswas and others explained the legal consequence of child marriage as well as the health related perils of such marriage. After long persuasion by Mr Biswas, the bride’s father eventually nodded to cancel the marriage.

“It was abject poverty that compelled the family to arrange the girl’s marriage. We requested them to send her back to school and block administrations would provide necessary help for her studies,” BDO Mr Biswas said.

It has been learnt from child marriage prevention wing of the district social welfare department that more than 50 child marriages could be thwarted since January this year.
