More than 100 Employees Start Indefinite Cease Work against Trinamul ‘Vandalism’

MALDA, 20 APRIL: More than 100 workers of Block Development Officer’s (BDO) office panchayets have ceased their works at Harishchandrapur-I block today in protest of yesterday’s ‘vandalism’ of Trinamul Congress with some inhabitants of Rasidabad gram panchayet under this block. The workers belonging to both the Congress and the CPI-M affiliate employees’ unions demanded their security on work and gheraoed the Block Development Officer (BDO) for the whole day.

It may be noted that a group of Trinamul supporters ransacked at the office of the BDO of Harischandrapur I block yesterday. It has been learnt that the Trinamul supporters demonstrated before the BDO office alleging that the widows, physically challenged and the senior citizens of Rashidpur gram panchayet under Harischandrapur-I block were not getting their wages for years.

While they were demonstrating tension mounted up and some of the agitators broke the window panes and table glasses of the office. Even BDO Sajal Tamang was also humiliated as the employees claimed.  Trinamul leader Tobarak Hossain conceded that some of their supporters broke glasses of the office but the party leaders restrained them from being violent further. BDO Sajal Tamang went to police station to report the incident though he didn’t comment in this regard officially.

Later at night BDO lodged an FIR against four persons. They were Tobarak Hossain, Jiaul Haque, Hakibuddin and Mukul Ali. They were all known Trinamul leaders of the block. However, None of them were arrested yet.

Tapan Mandal, an upper division clerk of BDO office said on behalf of the agitators, “Despite the specific complaint against them the Trinamul leaders are roaming around and police are not taking any action. We are scared. We’ll continue our cease-work in demand of our security.” All 75 workers of 7 panchayets under this block along with 35 workers of BDO office joined the demonstration. The agitation is still going on and even the intervention of officers from Chanchal Sub Division could not break the ice. Mr Mandal said, “We want the assurance from the SDPO about the arrest of the miscreants.” He claimed that workers belonging to both CPI-M and the Congress backed employees’ unions irrespective of their political differences had joined today’s stir.

On the other hand Tobarak Hossain claimed that they were framed with false charges. “Never did we assault the BDO or ransack the office. Rather misconduct of the Joint BDO sparked the anger of some women who led the agitation yesterday. We were there to control them.” A rally in support of the Trinamul marked the block today.

Superintendent of police Jayanta Pal didn’t like to comment in details in this regard. He only said: “Enquiry is in progress. We’d according to the report of the enquiry team.”
