Officers, Employees Complain against Malda DM
MALDA, 17 MAY: District magistrate (DM) of Malda continues to draw flak from the WBCS (Exe) officers of the district as today the officers formally submitted their protest letter against the DM. Meanwhile, Trinamul Congress backed workers’ union too sent letter to chief minister against the activities of the DM. They demanded probe against DM on her latest measures against some employees.
It may be recalled that Dr Archana took charge of DM on 24th August of 2011. Since then allegations of highhandedness was leveled against her number of times. Officers were allegedly subjected to misbehavior and humiliation, people coming to her office could not meet her as she allegedly played truant to her office. Even media persons too could not catch her at their needs. However, the situation worsened after the NVF worker was allegedly assaulted at her bungalow on 9 May. This raised the cry throughout the state and the pressure was mounting up on DM.
Yesterday, scribes were prevented by police from entering district administrative building. After they started demonstrating, the DM said that she didn’t impose any such ban and pass the buck on to a senior WBCS (Exe) officer and Additional District Magistrate – General (ADM-G) Nurul Islam. This made the ADM-G to outburst. Taking another ADM Nilkamal Biswas by his side, Mr Islam reacted sharply, “I’ve not grown horns on my head to give such order without DM’s approval. It was the DM who had asked me to give such orders and I was also told that otherwise action would be taken.” ADM-D Mr Biswas also stood by Mr Islam. Mr Islam also talked to the divisional commissioner on this issue over telephone.
Today, Trinamul backed United State Government Employees Federation demanded probe against DM. Bikash Sarkar, a leader of the organization said, “Being a woman DM has misbehaved with a female NVF worker in such a manner which is abominable. Failed to serve DM at her bungalow the NVF was locked in bathroom for hours. Such an incident is painful in changed scenario of the govt. We want an exemplary action against DM for this.” Another leader of the organization said, “We have heard that those officers who are not being able to comply with the unjust order of the DM. She is posting inexperienced officers to those posts instead. We have protested such peculiar behavior of DM and sent an appeal to chief minister, labour minister and others.”
Meanwhile, WBCS (Executive) Officers Association of Malda had sent a message expressing their disgust over the DM’s activities today. Signed by 40 officers of the district, an e-mail was sent to state secretary of the association Sourav Chaki. Refusing to give the details of their allegations against DM, district secretary Sudip Mukherjee said, “We are facing trouble in working here. Thus we have informed our state leaders. Further steps will be taken only after their instructions.”
DM Dr Archana refused to comment on both the issue saying, “I don’t know anything regarding all these allegations. I have cordial relation with them.” However, today she met the additional district magistrates (ADMs) individually and tried to appease them, sources said.
It may be recalled that this was not the first time that Archana was facing such wrath from the officers. Her stint as DM at East Midnapore too saw the same agitation of the officers against her.
