Expelled Students Forgiven by College Authorities!

MALDA, JULY: On the face of agitation of students’ union the ‘expelled’ student was allowed to take her university examinations. Though the college authority remained tightlipped on this issue, but the news being spread has created sensation in the academic circle. The occasion is BA 3rd year examination at Kaliachak College under University of Gour Banga (UGB).

On 4 July during the examination of Education, Kaliachak College became violent after a student was caught copying and expelled. Huge students led by CPI-M affiliate students’ organization Students’ Federation of India (SFI) along with outsiders took on the invigilator. The teacher was assaulted. The agitators also ransacked the college rooms and later rammed in the college principal’s chamber. They demanded the expulsion to be withdrawn of the student. Block development officer (BDO) of Kaliachak I Tamojeet Chakraborty along with huge force of police reached the college to control the situation. Later college authority lodged FIR against 5 including the SFI led students’ union general secretary.

They were arrested on 5 July but were released on bail next day. After being released the SFI leaders again staged agitation in college on 6July. They reiterated the demand of withdrawing the expulsion of the students. The teachers were ghearoed for long. Finally the agitation was lifted at the behest of the BDO. The teachers refused to perform invigilation on the question of security.

However, sources from college informed that the expulsion of the student was withdrawn and students union promised to run the examination smoothly. Teacher in charge Bijoya Mishra refused to comment on this issue saying “Situation is peaceful at present” without clarifying what happened to the expelled student.

BDO Tamojeet Chakraborty too said, “I know nothing of the development.”

A student of the students’ union said, “College authority had promised us that the student would sit for the next examinations and we are satisfied.”
