No Official Campaign on International Anti Child Labour Day
MALDA, 12 JUNE: When the world is celebrating International Anti-Child Labour Day, no enterprise of the district administrations was visible to commemorate the occasion. Notably, a large number of children are engaged as the labourers in the brick kilns as learnt bfrom sources in the labour department. However, organization like Bulbulchandi and Barind Development Society (BBDS) observe the day through a day long programme today.
No campaign was heard to aware the people against engaging children as labourers. Even today children were seen working at different capacities. When asked they said that they had no idea regarding the importance of the day. Bablu Mandal, who was seen carrying bags of cement on head, said, “I went to class III and then poverty compelled me to work as I have to support my family.”
Additional district magistrate (general) Nurul Islam conceded that there was no programme on anti-child labour. “I can’t speak detail in this regard,” Islam said. An official of the labour department also informed that no programme was taken up by the department today. It has been learnt from sources that the district social welfare department sources that the department thought of organizing a programme but finally that couldn’t be held.
Prabal Lala, secretary of BBDS, however, informed that they commemorated the day through a series of programmes at Bulbulchandi. “Tribal children participated in cultural competitions. A football tournament was organized from 9 June. We distributed prizes too. Block administrative officials were present in today’s programme,” Lala said.
