Police Kin Attempt to Rape a Child

MALDA, 15 JULY: A six year old girl was attempted to be raped but police sat idle on the complaint as the accused is policeman kin. Finally, when the complaint was taken at the behest of superintendent of police (SP), police became pro active on the complaint lodged against the victim herself!

On 12 July evening the six year old daughter of Utpal Lala of village Raipur under Baishnabnagar Police Station was alone in her room when a neighbour boy Subham Singh sneaked into the room. He forcibly stripped her and tried to rape her. At this point her cry brought her grandmother Jyotsna Lala entered the room and Subham released the girl. Inmates naturally got busy with the girl and taking this chance Subham managed to escape. Next morning the girl was taken to local Bedrabad Health Centre for her medical check up where the attempt of rape was proved.

Then  Lala went to Baishnabnagar police station to lodge a complaint on this issue. Although the policemen assured cooperation at first, the scenario changed with the entrance of aunt of Subham who is a home guard of this police station. His father too is an NVF worker posted at Kaliachak Police Station.

It is alleged that police tried to convince the victim family to settle down the issue mutually. They were kept waiting and complaint was not received till 3 pm. Frustrated the family came to Police Super Jayanta Pal yesterday. SP listened to the tale of the victim family and asked the Baishnabnagar police station to act over this complaint. Yesterday, evening Subham was arrested.

SP Jayanta Pal said, “Accused was arrested following the complaint and he was sent to juvenile court at Behrampore as he was a 14 year old boy.” He conceded that another complaint was lodged by Subham’s family on his being roughed up. However, the villagers alleged that the boy was of 18 years old but was shown 14 by police deliberately to minimize his punishment.
