Trinamul Minister and Cong Sabhadhipati Flagged Off Same NRHM Scheme Separately

MALDA, 8 JULY: The rift between Congress and Trinamul Congress in the district has taken a ridiculous turn at Manikchak when a single work was flagged off twice - once by Trinamul minister and within a week by Congress Sabhadipati of Zilla Parishad for the second time.

The work was to be done at the constituency of minister of women and social welfare cum district Trinamul president Sabitri Mitra. Naturally she did not want to lose the opportunity to take the limelight. On the other hand the Congress run Zilla Parishad (ZP) too was eager to cash in the credit prior to rural poll.

A boundary wall of Manikchak Health Centre was to be built under the fund of National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) through Malda Zilla Parishad. Accordingly a tender was floated by ZP of about Rs 21 lakh. Even the ZP has issued the work order.

However, Mitra getting the information could not waste time. On 25 June on her visit to Manikchak, she presided over a function organized by local Trinamul. There she officially laid the foundation of the construction work and delivered a speech lauding the state government as well. However, none from ZP or local panchayet aamity was present in that meeting.

This infuriated Ujjwal Chowdhury, sabhadipati of Congress run Malda ZP. He sharply reacted, “Minister does not maintain any decorum. In the district when the entire work is done through Zilla Parishad, she is deliberately ignoring us. This is not only going against the protocol but also devaluing the post of sabhadipati.”

Continuing the tirade against the minister, Chowdhury presided over a function at the same venue to lay foundation of the same wall on 6 July. No wonder, neither the minister nor any of Trinamul members of local panchayet aamiti was invited. Local villagers quipped, “Laying foundation twice, will the work begin at all? If complete how many times would it be inaugurated?”

Mitra on this fiasco defended herself, “I’m the minister of this state. Can I not inaugurate a programme?” regarding ignoring ZP, she said, “There is no compulsion that ZP should always be called. Besides, they are playing the spoilsport to the development of the state over the months.”
