Baton Charge on Puja Committee Members, Six including Trinamul Youth Leader Arrested

Malda, October 25, 2012: Excitement gripped the Bijaya Dashami night in Malda when three members of a Durga puja organizing club including the working president of district Trinamul Youth Congress (TMYC) Ananta Chakraborty were arrested on charges of sounding microphones after the allotted period and police allegedly indulged in ‘baton-charge’ that reportedly injured some club members and their relatives.

It has been alleged by the members of Avijatri Sangha near Sukanta more under English Bazaar police station that on the concluding day of the Durga puja club members like other years the members in a mood of festivity wanted to dance with music. Some club members went to the deputy superintendent of police (DSP) and sought his verbal permission in this regard.

“It’s true that we played the music little more than the given time. But the way the DSP and other police officials without any prior warning started charging batons indiscriminately on our members that shocked us. We protested but by them three or four members of our club were bleeding after being beaten by police without any caution notice,” alleged a club member.

District TMYC working president Chanraborty rushed to the club members. Chakraborty’s brother Achintya Chakraborty along with Rajarshi Sengupta and Ranjan Dewbnath were arrested. Chakraborty was reportedly arrested thereafter.

“The trio belongs to respectable families and they did not make least provocations for police. It has once again bared the police atrocities. As the family members were helplessly crying, we were compelled to seek release of the trio this morning by giving a written declaration and now it would be easy for police to blame us,” said another club member on condition of anonymity claiming that additional superintendent of police (ASP) Shyam Singh virtually apologized for baton-charge.

Superintendent of police (SP) Jayanta Pal conceded that TMYC district working president Ananta Chakraborty was arrested along with five other persons last night. “They were arrested for violating law and order on different occasions. Chakraborty was released this morning but legal action would follow,” Pal said.
