Dalu’s Proposed Induction to Union Cabinet Excites Dist Cong Leaders

AH Khan Choudhury (Dalu)

Malda, October 26, 2012: Long drought of 25 years for a ministerial berth in the Union cabinet is to be over for the Khan Choudhurys as south Malda MP and younger brother of Congress legend late Ghani Khan AH Khan Choudhury (Dalu) received a phone call around 11 am today from the cabinet secretary ensuring his induction to the Union cabinet. Mr Choudhury himself informed his intimate Congress leaders in Kotowali about this, sources said.

This may be mentioned that late Ghani Khan, who had enjoyed profound authority as the Union minister for Coal and Railway ministries in 1980s, was given the charge of virtually insignificant planning implementation ministry which he quit in 1987.

Since then he was never included to the Union cabinet though he won parliamentary election from Malda five more times thereafter. Even AH Khan Choudhury who retained the south Malda seat twice and Mausam Noor, late Ghani’s nephew and north Malda MP were not inducted in Union cabinet ever despite their relentless lobbying for a ministerial berth.

But as Trinamul Congress has withdrawn support from the Union ministry,Khan Choudury’s road to Union cabinet was virtually paved. Noor’s support for her uncle Dalu and the recent thinnest margin of win in minority dominated Jangipur constituency strengthened his claim for a ministry.

It has been learn that Dalu would be sworn in as a state minister at 11.30 am on 28 October when the Prime Minister is expected to reshuffle the cabinet. Dalu and his brother AH Khan Choudhury are now in Delhi. Dalu told the media over phone that following his brother late Ghani’s example he would swear in clad in coat and suit.

He also said that he was not sure of any particular ministry as it’s the prerogative of the Prime Minister but he expected that he would be given the charge of water resources or irrigation department considering the formidable erosion condition of Malda.

News of Dalu’s inclusion to Union cabinet enthused the DCC leaders. North Malda MP Mausam Noor said, “We’re happy that Dalu mama is chosen to be a minister. Now, he would materialize the unfulfilled dreams of development of late Ghani Khan.”

The Congress leaders believe that Dalu’s ministry would compensate for English Bazaar MLA Krishnendu Choudhury’s quitting the party. But Noor said, “I would personally speak to Mr Choudhury and request him to be in Congress as he is our asset.”
