English Bazaar MLA Heightens Suspense for Congress
Malda, October 10, 2012: Speculations are rife over the absence of MLA Krishenendu Choudhury in yesterday’s meeting of Congress at Chanchal, North Malda. In fact the factional feud of Congress has again come into fore.
In presence of PCC chief Pradip Bhattacharya, MP Deepa Dasmunshi, Mousam Noor, Abu Hasem Khan Choudhury (Dalu), Congress held a rally to garner support in favour of AIIMS to be set up at Raiganj. Described as a programme undertaken by state Congress and a part of rallies held at different places of North Bengal, yesterday’s meeting saw the speakers making scathing attack on Chief Minister and the state govt. While Bhattacharya found the “ghost of Jyoti Basu” in Chief Minister, Dasmunshi dared the CM to shift the AIIMS from Raiganj to Kalyani. However, MLA of English Bazaar Krishnendu Choudhury was conspicuous in his absence in yesterday’s meeting.
This was particularly significant at the backdrop of Choudhury’s known penchant for Trinamul Congress and its supremo. Even during the latter’s visit to Malda, Choudhury was visibly closer to the CM than her own party colleagues. Even the possibility of Choudhury’s joining the Trinamul after the breach of alliance, was not ruled out. Thus the political observers of the district had speculated that Choudhury would be abstaining from any such show where Trinamul government would be attacked.
True to the assumption Mr Choudhury did not go to Chanchal. Although AH Khan Choudhury refused to comment on this issue, Many Congress leaders were critical of Choudhury’s stand, “When PCC has organized the programme everyone should attend unless it is too serious a problem. But when one is still on the chair with the support of Trinamul how can he speak openly against the government?” asked a Khan Choudhury loyalist senior Congress leader. He hinted Choudhury’s holding the post of Chairman of English Bazaar Municipality with the support of Trinamul.
“It is the internal matter of Congress but we have heard yesterday Krishnendu was not in the meeting”, said Sabitri Mitra, Trinamul leader cum minister, “It is understandable that Krishnendu would not be a part of abusive words against Mamatadi. He respects her a lot and he is always welcome to our party,” she added.
Choudhury on the other hand, justified his absence with a “Durga puja meeting at municipality” and took on his critics heavily, “Those who are questioning my loyalty to Congress have not suffered like me as a Congressman.” He also questioned the absence of AH Khan Choudhury and MLA Samar Mukherjee in the meeting. However, regarding his possibility of joining Trinamul, he gave a tactical reply, “Time would answer everything.”
