Extensive Police Raid in Malda Before Puja: Miscreants Arrested with Arms, Illicit Liquor Destroyed

Malda, October 16, 2012: With the festivals round the corner Malda police are out to tighten their vigil to ensure the peaceful celebrations. In a special raid in last 24 hours police had arrested 215 miscreants from 11 police stations. Seven firearms were recovered from them; at least 2500 litre illegal spirit and Rs 50,000 from dice board were also seized. Superintendent of police (SP) claimed that such raid would go on during the festivals.

It has been learnt that police nabbed two youths roaming suspiciously in Rathbari area last night. Interrogation and search exposed two pipe guns from them. They were identified as Raju Raha of Krishnapally Bapuli colony area in Old Malda and Hussein Ali of Tahenpur, Raiganj in North Dinajpur. Police feared that they were planning some major crime at night. They are being interrogated.

Raid for the whole night, police of English Bazaar Police Station detained 38 miscreants including 14 with old criminal records. 100 bottles of wine was recovered while 500 litre of country spirit was destroyed. Similar raid at Ratua police station nabbed 37 goons and Bamangola police nabbed 28 persons and destroyed 250 litre country liquor.

In Kaliachak, police arrested one Juel Sheikh and recovered 2 fire arms and 7 rounds of cartridges from him. Cops destroyed 150 litre country liquor there. Harishchandrapur police have arrested one youth Sripada Das with arms while Manikchak police arrested three with the same charge.

In Chanchal cops arrested 20 miscreants from gambling board. Gazole police destroyed more than 1000 litre of illicit liquor. Another youth Tofajjel Hoque of Gazole police station was arrested with a pipe gun and a bullet.

SP, Malda Jayanta Pal said, “To ensure peace in the festival such raids will go on. Some old criminals were also arrested as precaution.”  

Meanwhile, deputy commandant of BSF Malda sector PP Singh informed that counterfeited currency amounting Rs 4 lakh in denomination of Rs 500 was recovered last night by 125 battalion of BSF at Chori Anantapur area under Kaliachak police station.
