Malda Durga Puja Completed Peacefully and Happily with Few Odd Events
Malda, October 25, 2012: Festivity was in the air for four days and the pandal-hoppers crowded the roads of Malda days and nights. Over all the Durga puja, the mega festival of the state came to an end peacefully without any major incident.
However, a minor girl was recovered by the members of a Durga puja committee of Agnisikha Club today. It has beenlearnt that seeing the girl weeping the club members asked her and came to know that she along with her elder sister was taken to Burdwan by their uncle who had already sold off her sister while she managed to flee. The girl was eventually handed over to the child welfare committee.
Dead body of a businessman was recovered today at Kaliachak today and it was identified as one Roki Sheikh (25) of Thutia bridge area under Kaliachak police station. Roki came to Malda yesterday and informed his wife Rina Bibi that he would be late to go back. His body with hands and legs tightened with ropes and mouth muffled was recovered from his go-down. Police have started an enquiry.
However, some small incidents marked the four festive days in the district. On the evening of Vijaya Dashami local Kalitala Club under the patronage of the Congress MLA and English Bazaar Municipality chairman Krishnendu Choudhry organized ‘Raban Badh’ (Killing of Ravana) in presence of minister Sabitri Mitra and Mr Choudhury in the ground of district sports association (DSA) which was attended by a large number of crowds.
Journalists of Malda under the banner of Malda Press Photographers’ Association honored the best puja organizers on the evening of Mahasaptami. The association also arranged the puja-tour for 150 poor children and served them lunch and dinner.
On Mahaashtami all roads led to Ramakrishna Ashrama Malda where amid huge crowd the Kumari Puja was observed. Thosands of people gathered there for witnessing the worshipping of a living girl as the embodiment of the Goddess Durga.
Two youths were killed and one injured in a road accident on 21 October evening near Noldubi under Malda police station. It was learnt that while the trio from Fatehpur village in Old Malda was coming to Malda town by a newly bought motorcycle to hop puja pandals, they were hit by a loaded lorry from behind and a student of Malda Colege Tapas Sarkar (20) and his friend Manoj Rajbanshi died on spot. Another youth Sujit Ranbanshi (24) was referred to Kolkata from Malda Medical College as his condition deteriorated.
One Person was arrested for allegedly raping a minor girl on 23 October night at Jogdola village under Bamangola police station. It was learnt that when the girl (14) went to listen to a music programme, one Sahadeb Baishyamali allegedly raped her. He was arrested later and court ordered to put him in jail custody for 14 days.
Altogether the canvass of Durga Puja was delineated with immense happiness and scattered sorrows.
