From NIA sources it was learnt that an FIR (No. 07/2011 dated 11/01/2011) was registered in PS Janipur Jammu in January last year. Later, Government of India transferred the case to NIA for further investigation. Accordingly, the instant case was re-registered at PS NIA (as Case No.RC-07/2011/NIA-DLI dated 19/05/2011). The allegation was that of criminal conspiracy to circulate counterfeit Indian currency notes to fund terrorist outfit Hizbul Mujahideen operating in Jammu and Kashmir. Later the charge sheet had been filed by NIA in July 2011 against four accused persons under section 120(B) of IPC, 489(C) of RPC and 13 & 40 UA(P) Act. Further investigation is continuing u/s 173 (8) Cr.PC.

It may be recalled that back in July, 2011, one Mohammed Salim Sheikh of Kaliachak, one of the accused in connection with this case was arrested by Malda police. He was later taken to Jammu by a team of NIA. Interrogating him the name of Badal Sheikh came to NIA and since then they were looking for him.

Debanjan Dutta, advocate of Badal Sheikh, said a case of circulating fake currency was filed against Badal. However, he did not like to comment if there were any other case against him too.

Badal’s wife Sahana Bibi, however, alleged that her husband was innocent and he was wrongly accused. “He can’t even operate a mobile phone. Police brutally arrested him on false charges,” she claimed while she came to see Badal today with their son Ilias, a student of class V.
