Huge Quantity of Illegal Spirit Recovered by Excise Department
Malda, November 5, 2012: Acting on a tip off excise department of Malda has recovered huge amount of spirit from Rathbari under English Bazaar Police Station. Three persons were arrested as a pick-up van loaded with 70 cans of spirit was nabbed. Each of the cans carried 70 litre of spirit.The car was coming from Dalkhola of North Dinajpur and was heading to Jangipur, Murshidabad.
Soumitra Biswas, deputy collector of excise, claimed that with this 1400 litre spirit at least 14 thousand bottles of country spirit could be made which worth Rs 10 lakh in clandestine market. Department has lodged case under section 46, 46A against the arrested trio. They include Samir Banerjee and Hareram Das, the driver and helper of the van and one Uttam Mandal of Jangipur.
Banerjee claimed his innocence saying, “On last Saturday we took the van loaded with green chilly from Behrampore to Falakata of North Bengal. While returning back to Behrampore, one Jani Mia of Dalkhola hired the van against Rs 2500 for reaching spirit for wooden burnish to Jangipur. We know nothing beyond that.”
Biswas observed, in number of places of Malda, factories are coming up for making illegal spirit. These spurious drinks often caused the damage of human organs. “To combat this excise department has begun a raid against illegal drinks and so far arrested 42 persons. More than 20000 litre spirit was destroyed,” he said.
It is learnt that Rs 33 crore of revenue was generated from liquor in 2011-12 while in this year the amount would be mounted up to Rs 40 crore, as hoped.
