Minister Krishnendu's Supporters Indulge in Euphoria

MALDA, 21 NOV: Krishnendu Choudhury, the political veteran from Malda finally boarded the ministerial bus after 22 years of active political odyssey that proceeded thereafter through numerous upheavals.

A law graduate of Calcutta University Choudhury, popularly known as ‘Kishan,’ belongs to an affluent zamindar family of Malda. An August, 1958 born Choudhury studied in AC Institution and Malda College and got involved in student politics under the banner of Chhatra Parishad (CP). Later he got involved with labourers’ organization of the Congress.

In I990 he commenced his active political career as a mere Congress councilor of English Bazaar Municipality (EBM). Mamata Banerjee, the then state Youth Congress (YC) chief, appointed him the district  YC president in 1991 and in 1995 he became the chairman of the EBM only to be replaced by a no confidence motion jointly brought by a the CPI-M and a Congress faction.

Choudhury narrowly escaped several attacks on his life sometimes allegedly by his political oppositions and sometimes allegedly by opposite factions of his own party.(end)

In 1999 he quit the Congress and was made the district Trinamul President by Mamata Banerjee. He recovered the EBM again as the chairman of the Trinamul and in 2001 contested as Trinamul candidate in English Bazaar assembly constituency. But luck did not favour him as only in this seat Congress fielded Goutam Chakraborty despite its alliance with the Trinamul in the state.

He underwent a tough political phase when he was defeated even in EBM election in 2005. Distance between him and his present leader Banerjee widened. In 2006 he joined the Congress again at the behest of late Ghani Khan Choudhury and was elected an MLA by a hair-line margin of odd 900 votes.

In 2010 he was re-elected to EBM and also elected the chairman. In 2011 he won in the assembly election on a Congress ticket for the second time and this time by the highest margin in the district.

Meanwhile, his relation with Mamata Banerjee
started reviving while he fell out with the district Congress president and MP AH Khan Choudhury (Dalu). Eventually, he accepted the invitation of Miss Banerjee following few meeting with her and resigned as the Congress MLA only yesterday.

After he was sworn in today, his followers burst into euphoria and festivity. Abir, patakas, dhaaks and sweets marked the jubilant celebration in front of EBM by the followers of the new ministers. Later, a rally traversed along the roads in Malda.

However, the celebration around 2 pm disrupted the traffic at Netaji Subhas Road. Unrestrained use of sound crackers too caused inconvenience of the commoners understood from their facial expression.
