‘Secret’ Examination Controversy Continues in UGB Despite Controller's Explanation
Malda, November 20, 2012: After the controversy regarding the separate examination of an third year honours examinee after the publication of final result rocked the University of Gour Banga (UGB), the controller of examinations (COE) in a press meet shielded the varsity apparently with some logic.
This may be mentioned that one Mou Barman of Malda College took her Bengali Honours 3rd year examination under UGB. The result of the examination that came out on 12 October revealed that she had failed in the 8th paper. Her father, retired government employee Premchand Barman said that following the shocking result of his daughter, they approached to the University for a Review of that paper. But with one month being passed, nothing was intimated by the varsity authorities regarding the review. They were knocking the door of the university regularly. “We came to know that the paper of my daughter was lost”, said Barman.
Finally a few days back Barman was reportedly told by the Controller of Examination (COE) department that his daughter’s test would be taken on 16 November. Accordingly the test was taken by Mou.
Interestingly, she did not get any written instruction regarding it. Moreover, Mou was given the test at the office of vice chancellor (VC). It is learnt that Prof Aditya Lala of Bengali department himself set the question paper.
Yesterday officiating COE Sanatan Das told the reporters that it was “not true” that the girl’s answer script was lost. “After the examination was over a security guard of the COE department caught a contractual staff of ours trying to insert Mou’s answerscript of 8th paper in a packet of 7th paper scripts. The staff was suspended at once after the security personnel lodged a complaint,” Mr Das said.
He added, “A fact finding committee was formed thereafter and on receipt of their report the girl was summoned and asked to take a sample test under the VC’s supervision.”
However, complications compounded when he said that the examinee’s previous answer copy was not cancelled and it was not yet determined which one between the two answer scripts of the girl would be evaluated.
However, such a hush-hush about the examination created huge controversy among the students as well as members of university council (UC). “It is totally illegal to take such examination of a single candidate. VC Achintya Biswashas earlier flouted number of rules in UGB. This time it has exceeded all precedence. VC has given a special examination of a particular candidate keeping all concerned in dark. Worse, the question setter and the examiner was the same person which goes against the spirit of examination. We are approaching to the Chancellor against this VC shortly”, said Dulal Ghosh, a member of the UC.
CPI-M's students' organisation SFI district secretary Abhijit Dey also criticized COE in charge Das's statement. "In stead of solving the riddle, he complicates it further. We have already demanded the intervention of the higher education minister Bratya Basu's intervention into such serious allegation," Dey said.
District Chhatra Parishad (CP) secretary Prasenjit Das has also criticized the VC's role into controversy.
