Two Youths Killed in Road Accident, Liquor Shop Gutted


Malda, November 2, 2012:  Two youths were killed in a road accident and the mob turned violent at Sovanagar under English Bazaar Police Station. Two licensed liquor shops were set into fire and huge combat force came to control the irate crowd.

The accident took place at 12.30 pm when Minu Sheikh (32) and Jainal Sheikh (32) of village Chandipur were riding in a motorcycle and hit a mini truck coming from opposite direction. Both of them died on spot. It is learnt that the duo was migrated labourers who came home a few days back. They allegedly had had their drinks taking it from the Foreign Liquor Shop prior to the accident.

With the news of accident being spread, hundreds of irate mob rushed in. their wrath fell on the liquor shop and one country liquor shop nearby. They alleged that the drunken youths often fell to accident owing to these shops. Police came in but they were thwarted by the villagers and the bodies could not be rescued.

Before police came the shops were set into fire. Fire brigade was called in but they too were prevented from controlling fire. Both the shops were gutted before fire brigade. More shops were ransacked along with the truck. Road was blocked for hours. The situation was going out of control. Combat force had arrived and police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the mob. However, villagers claimed that police fired blank although there was no casualty.

 Finally the blockade was lifted after three hours and the bodies were sent for post mortem. SP, Malda Jayanta Pal said, “The situation is in control now although none could be arrested.”
