Tourism Minister Demands Enquiry against Congress run MZP, Cong Retaliates
Malda, November 25, 2012: New minister in charge (MIC) for tourism and chairman of English Bazaar Municipality (EBM) Krishnendu Choudhury said that he would urge the state government to hold an enquiry into the corruption of the Congress run Malda Zilla Parishad (MZP). Interestingly, Choudhury did not blame the sabhadhipati of MZP but targeted the purto karmadhakshya of MZP and the general secretary of district Congress committee (DCC) Mostaque Alam.
“Recently I came to know about formidable complaints against a senior Congress leader and karmadhakshya of MZP who allured the youths with the job offers in panchayets and collected huge sum amount from them,” Choudhury said without naming Alam.
“I don’t have the taste to utter the name of such a corrupt Congress leaders who comes to MZP with an empty bag in the morning and returns with the bag full of money in the evening. People want to know the source of his income that made him buy property in Malda town as well as in Kolkata. There should be vigilance enquiry against such karmadhakshya,” Choudhury said.
“Our party’s motto is to ensure transparent governance and the CM Mamata Banerjee has declared war against corruption. A special wing has been formed to fight corruption and it would look into such sensational allegation of corruption in MZP,” he said soon after joining the Trinamul Congress and becoming a cabinet minister quitting the Congress.
One of Choudhury’s aides Debapriya Saha, whose expulsion on the day of Choudhury’s induction to state cabinet was declared by Alam and Narendranath Tiwary, echoed the same allegation.
Hinting that it was Alam, Saha said, “A Congress MZP karmadhakshya has indulged in huge corruption and it’s he who is expelling the honest Congress leaders from the party. We want strong action against him,” Saha, who recently joined the Trinamul, said. He added that Trinamul Congress would also demand enquiry into “land scam” of EBM between 2006 and 2010. Interestingly, Tiwary was the EBM chairman during the period.
Alam, however, welcomed enquiry against him. “I suggest that instead of vigilance, let there be a CBI enquiry rather into the allegations raised by the new Trinamul minister and his followers. But do they have the guts to face enquiry into their deeds?” he said.
“The EBM authority must clarify why proper tender was not done before building the minority bhawan in Malda. We know who are getting the favour with contracts from the EBM. A proper enquiry would reveal everything,” he said.
Regarding the “employment scam” as raised by the Trinamul minister, Alam said, “A notice to recruit panchayet employees was issued in 2008. The process began in 2009. But following an embargo it was suspended. Now it has been resumed and very transparently.” He claimed that the tender process in MZP was done with all clarity.
