TMC’s Factional War on Street Centering Extortion: Leaders Wounded

Malda, Dec 3, 2012: Feud within the party centering allegations of of extortion and occupying a local club left the district Trinamul Congress secretary hospitalized. Fingers were raised to district youth TMC president and even the state leadership was informed. Clash took place in front of the minister and district president’s house. Embarrassed district leadership naturally tried to avoid the issue.

Last night around 8.00 pm, a group of Trinamul workers close to youth Trinamul president Amlan Bhaduri, was involved in a tiff with another faction at Sadarghat in front of the house of district  president cum minister in charge of women development and social welfare Sabitri Mitra.

It is learnt that Kalyan Moulik, district secretary of Trinamul led the other faction. The tiff was about the money collected from the local market and the sand loaded lorries of banks of river Mahananda.

Bhaduri’s men allegedly were enjoying the money while Moulik demanded the share. The quarrel soon turned out violent as Moulik was roughed up and threatened with dire consequence in case of further demand of money.

Injured Moulik along with another youth leader Subrata Das was later rescued by local men and was sent to hospital. Moulik was later shifted to a local nursing home and is still undergoing treatment there. He lodged a complaint to police against the attackers who included Anirban, brother of youth TMC president.

Moulik said, “Amlan’s followers don’t want us to enter our district president’s office. When we protested they suddenly turned violent and attacked us.” Moulik’s wife Monalisa said, “We are scared with the threat to be attacked any time.”

Bhaduri, however, rubbished the allegation saying, “I was not at all at the spot. My brother with his friends was playing carom in the club room. They have nothing to do with the politics. I heard that Moulik went there to demand money from the club which they refused.”

It has been alleged by locals that Moulik and his associates had been involved in numerous extortionist activities since long. “They often threatened shop owners and Moulik has an ill reputation of seeking refuge to the Trinamul leaders whoever became the district president to suppress his ill reputation and to show that he is a powerful leader,” said a local preferring anonymity.

Trinamul sources informed that after Krishnendu Choudhury joined Trinamul, Moulik’s position weakened as Choudhury never indulged people like Moulik and his associates.

Mitra too tried to avoid the issue saying, “Internal feud of the club, nothing political.” However, she acknowledged that Moulik was the secretary of the district Trinamul.

Adamant Moulik said, “I’ve already informed the entire matter to Mukul Roy and want to see the end of such assault.”
