Crib Death Hits Malda Medical College Hospital again, Eight Babies Died in 12 hours
MALDA, 9 JAN: Cold wave proves fatal for the new born babies at Malda Medical College and Hospital as eight babies died in last 12 hours there. Mercury has dipped further in the district which has killed few more in the district in last 24 hours. However, the district administration has kept denying the report of death out of cold.
The minimum temperature of the district has touched 4.7 degree centigrade. Administration had already declared holidays for the schools for two days owing to the biting cold.
In Malda Medical College and Hospital, there was a rerun crib death in last 12 hours. Apart from the premature birth and low weight, bitter chill has played deadly for the babies.
4 days son of Ananta Murmu of Bamangola died in the hospital last night. Besides 8 days old twin babies of Parvin Biwi of Gazole could not survive the cold and died yesterday morning. Late night of Monday saw the death of 2 days old daughter of Malufa Biwi of Harishchandrapur. Gangarampur’s Nargis Biwi’s 3 years old daughter was suffering from breathing trouble and was taken to Malda Hospital yesterday. The baby died this morning. Besides 8 years old Subhasis Saha also died in the hospital last night. The report of another newborn reached this afternoon. In addition two days old daughter of Purnima Das too died in last 12 hours.
Principal of Medical College Dr U Bhadra said, “I’m out of station and have got the report of death of four babies. But I’m not sure of the reason behind their death.”
On the other hand the Vice Principal of the college MA Rashid feared that most of the babies were taken from outside and got bronchopneumonia in cold while being brought in.
It is also learnt that owing to load shedding the warmers of the children ward were off for a long time which proved dear for the ailing babies.
