English Bazaar By-Poll Ends Peacefully
MALDA, 23 FEB: The by-poll in 51, English Bazaar legislative assembly constituency (EB LAC) concluded almost peacefully today. Out of 1,19,799 voters approximately 80 percent cast their votes today in 253 polling booths including two auxiliary booths as learnt from the returning officer (RO) and Sub divisional officer Pushpendu Mitra.
Mr Mitra said, “No major incident occurred today barring a few complaints lodged by all political parties.” It has been learnt in booths number 56, 125, 237 the EVMs had to be replaced following technical errors. He informed that the electronic voting machines (EVMs) would be kept amid tight security in Malda Polytechnic College where the Central para-military forces (CPMF) personnel would guard those and three CCTVs in three directions were fitted.
Union minister of state (MoS) and district Congress president AH Khan Choudhury (Dalu) alleged that some Trinamul Congress councilors including the wife of Trinamul candidate Krishnendu Choudhury’s wife Kakali Choudhury were trying to influence the voters. He demanded her arrest.
On the contrary, Debapriya Saha, chief election agent of Krishnendu Choudhury, lodged a complaint with the observer that Dalu was plying by his car with the logo of MP for influencing the voters.
District Left Front Chairman Jiban Maitra also alleged that ruling Trinamul leaders indulged in booth-jamming and influencing voters in some cases.
Trinamul Congress, Congress and CPI-Mseparately claimed that they would get the people’s verdict in English Bazaar.
