Malda SP Transferred before EB By-Poll, Cong, CPM, BJP Accuse and Slam DM
MALDA, 1 FEB: Superintendent of police (SP), Malda Jayanta Pal has been transferred by the Election Commission (EC) for allegedly violating model code of conduct (MCC) for forthcoming by-poll of English Bazaar assembly. All major political parties including the Congress, the CPI-M and the BJP accused and slammed the DM Ms Archana of the SP’s transfer and demanded her immediate removal for the sake of the ‘fair’ poll in Malda and harmoniously said that Mr Pal’s transfer was like a ‘bolt from the blue.’
Sources informed that recently Ms Archana informed the EC that Mr Pal did not adhere to the MCC laid by the EC. It was also learnt the Mr Pal was accused of not hindering the inaugural procession of the 24th Malda Book Fair by the students though there was confusion whether the procession was violating the MCC. It may be mentioned that the EC subsequently approved the book fair.
Mr Pal joined as the SP, Malda in September, 2011 only a month after Ms Archana joined as the DM. Sources informed that gradually the relation between the heads of the district administration and district police turned sour and even the conversation between them virtually stopped. Even Ms Archana asked to shift the parade of 26 January from police line ground to Brindabani ground adjacent to her quarter.
The DM became the cynosure of controversies before also. A female NVF worker alleged that she was locked by Ms Archana in the bathroom and was abused for failing to operate an air conditioner. A written complaint was lodged and Mr Pal as the SP forwarded the complaint to the appropriate authority. The matter is pending with the Human Rights Commission now. This extended the distance between Ms Archana and Mr Pal, sources informed.
Later, Nurul Islam, the then additional district magistrate (general) also opened mouth against Ms Archana claiming that he felt humiliated by her. The WBCS (executive) association’s state leaders had to come to Malda to resolve the matter and Mr Islam was subsequently transferred also.
Today when contacted over phone, Mr Pal said regarding his transfer, “I have also heard that I have been transferred but not yet received any written order.” It has been learnt he would be sent somewhere near Siliguri.
District Left Front chairman Jiban Maitra said, “We have no grudge against Mr Pal. We never lodged any complaint against him. But we lodged complaint against the DM who is harassing us unnecessarily remaining blind to the activities of the ruling party in violating the MCC.” “We would request out state leadership to complaint against the DM again,” he said.
Former minister and Congress MLA Sabina Yeasmin also said, “Ms Archana never speaks to the opposition leaders. She is more interested in attending even the blood donation camp organized by the ruling party. We have already complained against her for playing a ruling party’s partisan role and now we have informed the Central Congress leadership against her and demanded her removal.”
BJP’s state general secretary Biswapriya Roy Choudhury said, “We believe that the election cannot be fair and peaceful if Ms Archana continues as the DM. Our state leadership has been requested to urge the EC to remove her forthwith for the sake of a fair election.”
It may be mentioned that only yesterday the Congress, the CPI-M and the BJP moved to the EC against Ms Archana for violating the MCC in English Bazaar.
State tourism minister and Trinamul candidate Krishnendu Choudhury, however, said, “I have heard that the SP, Malda has been transferred. It’s entirely EC’s prerogative. I would not speak anything in this regard.”
