TMC, Cong File Nominations for By-Poll Claiming Themselves as Ghani’s True Successors
MALDA, 4 FEB: Both the Trinamul Congress and the Congress candidates, claiming themselves to be the ‘original’ successor of late Ghani Khan, today filed their nominations with the sub divisional officer (SDO) of Malda Sadar and returning officer for the ensuing by-poll of 51, legislative assembly. After filing the nominations the Trinamul candidate Krishnendu Choudhury and the Congress candidate Narendranath (Nadu) Tiwary separately claimed that they would get the people’s mandate.
Interestingly, after filing the nominations both the Trinamul and the Congress vowed to materialize the incomplete dreams of Malda myth late Ghani Khan and both the parties claimed themselves to be his only successors.
Tourism minister of the state Mr Choudhury, whose resignation as the Congress MLA before joining the Trinamul caused the by-poll, reached the district collectorate building at 10.40 am with his train of supporters. He offered flowers and sweets to all famous temples and mosques of Malda town and got the blessings of the priests there. Thereafter he along with his cabinet colleague and district Trinamul president Sabitri Mitra, district youth Trinamul president Amlan Bhaduri, district Trinamul leaders including Debapriya Saha and other Trinamul municipal councilors went to Brindabani ground to pay floral tribute to the statue of late Ghani Khan and then filed his nomination.
Later, Mr Choudhury said that he was guided by late Ghani Khan and encouraged by Mamata Banerjee. “I want to translate their dreams into reality and people of English Bazaar know under what circumstances I had to quit the party and I did so only to work more for the people of Malda as Barkatda always asked me to do,” he said.
Mrs Mitra said, “People have understood that only we, and not the Congress, are capable of carrying on Barkatda’s unfulfilled projects. The Congress exploits Barkatda and we are inspired by him.”
A couple of hours after the Trinamul had left a gigantic rally of the Congress supporters reached the collectorate building with Mr Tiwary who was accompanied by the former ministers of state and Congress MLAs Sabina Yeasmin, AN Khan Choudhury, Isha Khan Choudhury, Asif Mehbub, Samar Mukherjee, district Congress secretary Kalisadhan Roy and Mostaq Alam.
Before coming to filing his nomination Mr Tiwary also paid visits to several temples and mosques and also went to Kotowali to offer floral tribute to late Ghani’s mazar. However, there was a slight embarrassment for the Congress candidate as some errors were found in his nomination paper and they had to prepare a new set there.
Eventually, Mr Tiwary submitted his nomination at 2.30 pm. “We would highlight the pro-people policies of the Congress as well as unmask the opportunist politics of the Trinamul candidate. Today’s mega rally has proved that I’m going to have a land-slide victory,” Mr Tiwary said after filing nomination.
“Trinamul candidate is speaking of Barkat Sahib but he must remember Barkat Sahib never changed his loyalty from the Congress to any other party. People would vote against his treacherous politics,” said Mr Mehbub.
SDO (sadar) and returning officer Pushpendu Mitra said, “Two nomination papers were submitted today and the nomination was altogether very peaceful.”
