EC Officials manhandled by TMC workers led by minister's son in law,

Manikchak (Malda), 10 April, 2014: Officials of Election Commission and camera persons were attacked and manhandled and a video camera was broken by the Trinamul Congress leaders and workers in presence of Malda north Trinamul candidate Moazzem Hossain when they were trying to stop a poll-campaign rally with nearly 250 motorcycles organized by Trinamul today at Khayertala village here around 11 am.

Manikchak BDO Sange Tasi Dukpa has lodged an FIR against four Trinamul leaders after the EC workers informed him about the attack.

District Trinamul president and social welfare minister Sabitri Mitra’s son in law Samadip Sarkar allegedly initiated the attack while the EC workers were recording the Trinamul rally.

It has been learnt from sources that Trinamul planned to organize a gigantic motorcycle-rally at Nurpur area in Manikchak today despite the EC forbids such rallies. Police officials said that no permission was taken before organize the rally.

Today after the rally started around 10.30 am two teams of EC – model code of conduct (MCC) team and video surveillance team (VST) reached Khayertala village around 11 am with camera personnel. Officer in charge (OC) – MCC Ajit Das and OC-VST Dilip Saha explained to the Trinamul supporters that holding such motorcycle-rally was illegal as per EC norms.

It was then the irked Trinamul supporters rushed after the EC officials and manhandled them. Minister’s son in law allegedly slapped a cameraman of EC and following him others Trinamul supporters started abusing and assaulting the EC team members. Some Trinamul supporters even threatened to scorch the EC’s car.

EC team had to be back apprehending further deterioration of situation, eyewitnesses said. OC-MCC, Das said, “We requested the rally-participants to stop the rally as it had around 250 motorcycles. But to our utter dismay they started slapping and punching our staffs grabbing them by collars. Trally went towards Nurpur.”

“A police team came thereafter and we informed them the incident in details. Police chased the rally and finally seized six motorcycles when the rally reached Mathurapur. We returned from the spot and reported the entire episode to the BDO,” Das added.

Dukpa said, “Some EC appointed personnel were assaulted when they went to stop a motorcycle rally of Trinamul Congress today. FIR was lodged against Samadip Sarkar, Mukleshur Rahman, Jamal Sheikh and Motiur Rahman.” Interestingly, all those four persons are known to be active Trinamul supporters in the locality.

Minister Mitra, however, denied assault of the EC appointed workers by her party activists. “It is a baseless allegation. After EC officials instructed our workers went away. But some EC team placed their vehicle in front of our candidate’s car when the excitemen began. Our supporters did not assault the EC personnel.”

She further alleged that the EC observers were indirectly favouring Congress in Malda and threatened to lodge a complaint with in this regard.

Malda DM Sharad Dwivedi said, “EC personnel were attacked in Manikchak today. BDO was asked to lodge an FIR in this regard and to file a report. He was asked to seize those motorcycles which participated in the poll-rally.”

New Malda SP Rupesh Kumar said, “Police have started a case on basis of BDO’s complaint. Raid has been started to arrest the accused. Six motorcycles have been seized. Police have holding a probe seriously.”
