MMCH Principal, Government Doctors Attend Campaign Meeting for TMC Candidates: CPM, Cong to move to EC

MALDA, APR 4, 2014: Presence of principal of Malda Medical College Hospital Saibal Mukherjee and other district health officials on the dais in a political meeting convened by Progressive Doctors’ Association (PDA) to campaign for the TMC Congress candidates has sparked serious controversies. Two Trinamool ministers Krishnendu Choudshury and Sabitri Mitra along with other district Trinamul leaders were present in the meeting.

Alleging that the doctors working under state government health service have violated service rule as well as model code of conduct (MCC) of election commission (EC), CPI-M and Congress threatened to lodge complaint with the EC seeking stern action in this regard.

The meeting that commenced in Malda town hall around 12.30 pm on Sunday was attended by doctors working in hospitals as well as some private doctors. Sources informed that SMS was sent to different block medical officers (BMOHs) asking them to participate in today’s meeting. It was mentioned in the SMS sent in the name of PDA district president Tapas Chakraborty and secretary Bikramjit Dhar that the attendance of doctors was “mandatory.”

However, the turnout was quite low and less than 70 doctors were found present in the meeting. Ministers Choudhury and Mitra thanked the doctors for holding the meeting and suggested them to “convince” the patients and others to vote for Trinamool.

When asked if attending such a meeting with a political manifesto from the capacity of MMCH principal was justified, Dr Mukherjee simply refused to reply and said he went there as an invitee. A deputy CMOH too was visibly embarrassed when asked how he could attend the meeting as the government servant.

PDA district president Dr Chakraborty, however, defended them saying, “It was a closed door meeting.” He, however, denied that doctors were asked to attend the meeting mandatorily. Regarding poor attendance he blamed the weather.

District Left Front chairman Jiban Maitra said, “It is a clear violation of service rules as well as EC’s MCC. We would move to the EC seeking their intervention.” Malda north Congress candidate Mausam Noor said, “We have already taken notice of the matter. It is a very serious issue. We are going to move to the EC about the meeting.”
