Raped Housewife Commits Suicide, Kangaroo Court Blamed



MALDA, APR 3, 2014: Excitement rocked Basanatola village of Uttar Chandipur gram panchayet in Manikchak police station since last 24 hours after a housewife set herself on fire after she was allegedly raped by a neighbouring youth and did not get justice in the local kangaroo court. The housewife Pratima Mandal (30) died today.

Claiming that Pratima’s husband Kalu Mandal (33) is a Trinamool worker and the unjustified verdict of the kangaroo court was taken by some Congress and CPI-M members district Trinamul president and minister Sabitri Mitra rushed to Malda Medical College Hospital and consoled the family of the deceased housewife. She further said that police must take stern action against all those who were responsible for the housewife’s death.

Kalu Mandal said that on 1 March night a local youth Navin Mandal raped his wife while she was alone with her four sons. Kalu was away from house. According to Kalu, on 1 April  morning the matter was came to notice of the villagers and on the plea of the housewife a kangaroo court was organized.

“However, decision makers of the kangaroo court like Ratan Mandal, Chandradip Mandal, Dilip Mandal, Bisweswar Mandal and others suggested dismissing the matter with mere apology from the accused Navin Mandal. No monetary penalty or no other punishment was imposed on the accused. Even Pratima’s character was doubted by some of the kangaroo court judges. Such a verdict shocked her heavily and she set herself on fire on 2 April mornig,” Kalu claimed. He said that Chandradip Mandal was a Congress supporter and others were CPI-M supporters.

Pratima’s father Bijay Mandal too blamed the kangaroo court’s decision and said that before death her daughter had told him that she had committed suicide to save herself from further humiliation.

Manikchak OC Ashutosh Pal today inspected the village and spoke to the relatives of the deceased housewife and her son.

SP, Malda Rajesh Yadav said, “It is a very unfortunate incident. Police have been seriously probing into the matter.”
