Administrative crisis of UGB may deepen further as acting COE’s resignation anticipated

Malda, 6 February, 2015: The administrative crisis of the University of Gour Banga (UGB) may deepen further as the officiating controller of examinations (COE) Dr Sanatan Das may tender his resignation to avoid unnecessary criticism of retaining the post after not being found suitable two times consecutively by the selection committee engaged to find a permanent COE for the varsity.

It may be mentioned that the UGB authorities conducted an interview for selection of permanent registrar and COE on 30 January in Kolkata. Along with eight other incumbents Dr Das, who has been in charge of the examination department of UGB since 3 August, 2012, also turned up with the hope that his prolonged experience in handling the important wing of the varsity would fetch him the permanent status. He reportedly appeared for interview for the post of permanent COE once before too but was found unsuitable then too.

A Trinamul Congress leader concerned with the UGB informed that Dr Das confided the matter of resignation to him. The Trinamul leader said, “Dr Das has intended to resign from his post after reportedly found unsuitable twice for the post of permanent COE of the UGB. He has been managing his office successfully. It is unfortunate that he was not through in the selection process for the second time in a row.”

Dr Das, when asked about the issue, only said, “I have contemplated to quit as the officiating COE. The matter is still under consideration.”

Vice chancellor Prof Gopal Mishra however said that he had no information in this regard.

A senior educationist said that after not being selected as the permanent COE questions may be raised deliberately by some circles whether the examination-department of UGB was being managed by an ‘unsuitable person.’ “This may have prompted Dr Das to contemplating his quitting the office,” he said.

This may be mentioned that UGB since its inception never got a permanent COE barring once. Several teachers acted as the COE of the UGB before, some reportedly for tenure of even a couple of days. Dr Sudipta Mukherjee who was the only permanent registrar resigned on 28 June, 2011.
