Birth of three daughters in a row, father tries to kill the baby girl

Malda, 6 February, 2015: Enraged by consecutive births of three daughters a daily wage earner allegedly attempted to kill his youngest daughter by throwing her away on the floor. In a bid to rescue the baby her mother Bebi Bibi (29) too was hit by her husband Lalan Chowdhury. The incident occurred last night at Raghabati village of Baharal gram panchayat in Ratua police station approximately 45 km from here. The injured baby and her mother were admitted to Malda Medical College Hospital (MMCH) by their neighbours. The accused husband has scampered away after his mother-in-law Goni Bibi lodged a written police complaint.

It has been learnt from police sources that Bebi Bibi from Sahapur village in Ratua police station was married to Lalan Chowdhury of Raghabati village in the same police station ten years back. The couple got three daughters – Piari Khatun, Dulali Khatun and Nisha Khatun. Consecutive births of daughters reportedly infuriated Lalan.

Tiff between the husband and the wife was a regular incident as informed by the neighbours who further added that even the bitterness between the duo could not be resolved even at the kangaroo-court convened several times before.

Bebi Bibi alleged that on Thursday night too her husband Lalan under spell of intoxication threw away their youngest daughter Nisha forcibly on the floor. The baby-girl was quite injured. As she rushed to her rescue, Lalan hit him too with a heavy weapon, the wife alleged.

She complained that one of her daughters Dulali too fell critically ill and died 18 days back owing to her father’s gross negligence in arranging treatment for her. “Even her father used to throw away medicines purchased for Dulali,” Bebi Bibi alleged.

Goni Bibi, Bebi’s mother, too alleged that Lalan used to torture his wife regularly as he was infuriated with birth of three daughters one after another. She lodged a police complaint against Lalan today but by then Lalan fled from the locality.

SP Prasun Banerjee said, “Police have been trying to nab the accused who hid his skin after allegedly attempting to kill his daughter.”
