Woman and youth arrested on charge of peddling fake currencies

Malda, 10 February, 2015: Two persons including a woman were arrested by English Bazaar police from regulated market area last night around 10.30 pm for allegedly peddling counterfeit currencies. Fake currencies amounting Rs 1 lakh were reportedly recovered from them.

Inspector in charge of English Bazaar police station Dilip Karmakar said that the duo was identified Shefali Bibi (48) and Rafiqul Islam (32). They are the inhabitants of Keishnapur village of Jadupur II gram panchayat in English Bazaar police station.

“Acting on a tip off police arrested them last night and seized the fake currencies from them. Each of them had counterfeit currencies of Rs 50,000 and all the notes were of Rs 1000. The woman is a neighbour of the youth,” Mr Karmakar said.

It has been learnt from police sources that the duo got the fake currencies from the other side of the fencing at India-Bangladesh border and was going to Malda town station to hand over those to someone as admitted by them during the primary interrogation.

SP Prasun Banerjee said, “A woman and a youth were arrested last night with fake currencies from Enhlish Bazaar police station area. A probe has been initiated into the matter.”
